The World Celebrated Human Genetics for the First Time
On 30 March 2026, scientists, clinicians, policymakers, students, and communities gathered at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in The Gambia, and online across the globe, to mark the first-ever World Human Genetics Day. Organised by HuGAA in partnership with AfSHG, THGO, the Ministry of Health The Gambia, EFSTH, AfOx, and Global Properties, the hybrid event brought the power of human genetics into public consciousness. On saturday 16th of september, the first meeting held by HuGAA took place at the TAF Africa Conference Center. It highlighted the need to destigmatise genetic diseases and promote awareness of the prevalence of genetic diseases in The Gambia.

"Introduction to Genetics, Ethics and Society" is a week-long virtual workshop that aims to equip it's participants with knowledge and skills necessary to appreciate, articulate and address ethical, legal and social issues (ELSI) in genetics research and society. This workshop will take place from August 5th to 9th, 2024, in five sessions of two hours each (1:00 PM - 3:00 PM GMT). Participants are expected to attend all five sessions. A certificate will be issued at the end of the workshop.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: This workshop is designed for anyone interested to learn about genetics, ethics and society. There are no formal prerequisites.
HuGAA will sponsor 10 Gambians to attend this workshop.
