The inaugural World Human Genetics Day took place on 30 March 2026, and the response exceeded all expectations. From the opening keynote to the final session, WHGD 2026 demonstrated what is possible when science, community, and purpose come together.
• Hybrid event hosted at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, Banjul, The Gambia
• Participants from across Africa and the global diaspora joined in person and online
• Ministerial address from the Honourable Minister of Health signalling government commitment to genomics in The Gambia
• Scientific presentations spanning kidney disease genomics, sickle cell, and African ancestry research
• Community and public engagement sessions bringing genetics to non-specialist audiences
WHGD 2026 is the first chapter of what HuGAA intends to be an enduring annual observance — one that grows in reach, recognition, and impact with each passing year. We are working towards formal international recognition through UN and WHO/UNESCO pathways. Watch this space
