Human genetics is not just a scientific discipline, it is the study of who we are, where we come from, and what makes us vulnerable to disease. Yet for too long, this field has overlooked the population with the greatest genetic diversity on the planet: people of African ancestry
Africa holds more genetic diversity than any other continent, yet African populations are significantly underrepresented in global genomics research. This gap has real consequences: genetic risk scores, diagnostic tools, and precision medicine treatments developed predominantly from European datasets may not work as effectively — or at all — for African patients.
HuGAA was founded on the conviction that this must change. Through World Human Genetics Day, we are creating a platform to elevate African genomics, challenge misconceptions, reduce stigma around genetic conditions, and advocate for investment in African genomic infrastructure.
World Human Genetics Day is our commitment to a science that includes everyone. Join us on 30 March 2026.
